Historic Walnford  offers over 150 years of history through multiple generations of the Waln Family in Upper Freehold. Buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries - including the grand 1774 home, carriage house with vehicles, operating 19th century gristmill, and many original artifacts - provide a variety of program opportunities that focus on domestic life, industrial heritage, and historical and current environmental challenges. Programs have multi disciplinary options and can often meet the needs of home schoolers, scouts and adult groups, as well as classroom field trips. 1. Guided Site Tour 
An overview of the Waln family at Walnford: the buildings, environment, social and cultural traditions of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

2. Guided Mill Tour 
Learn about 19th century gristmills - take a tour, watch the machinery in action, experience the how and why of milling grain, and discuss the evolution of milling and water power at Walnford.

3. The Little Red Hen in Waln's Mill  
This introduction to grain and milling includes a tour of the mill. Participants experience the operating machinery and the re-telling of a classic tale.

4.  Wetlands Tour 
Explore the different wetland settings at Walnford.  Discuss the classification and function of wetlands, the plant and animal life, seasonal and historical changes, and ecological balance. Available only during April, May and June.

5.  Hands-on Experiences  
These activities enhance your tour and some provide a tangible souvenir (pick one per time block): pen and ink calligraphy, weaving, old-fashioned games, and visual scavenger hunt.

6.  Raise the Rafters   
Experience the teamwork involved in timber-frame construction as everyone helps with a variety of jobs to assemble a modest structure. Fit post to sill, join mortise and tenon and raise the bents, constructing a building as it was done at Walnford in the 18th and 19th centuries.

7.  Pieces of the Past Outreach Program    
This program introduces Historic Walnford to your group at your location, using images and artifacts to share the rich history of this site when you can't travel, or as an introduction to the site before you visit.

8. Archaeology   
Uncover history as you carefully dig and sift in our seeded pit, locating the remnants of 200 years of domestic, agricultural and industrial life at Walnford. Weather dependent program.

9. Tea at Walnford    
Sample tastes from the past with afternoon tea in the elegant 18th century Waln home. Sweet treats made from period recipes from the 18th to 20th centuries and pots of freshly brewed tea will be served after a tour of the site.
