Challenger Place – A Playground for Children of All Abilities
Challenger Place is a place for all children to play in Monmouth County. This universally accessible playground provides all children, at their own level of play, an opportunity to laugh, play, grow and learn together. This play facility, opened in June 2004, includes elevated surfaces that are accessible to those in wheelchairs and Braille signs for individuals who are visually impaired. Each of the three play structures has areas in where children of varied abilities can play together, enjoying fun and stimulating activities. This playground project was a joint venture of the Monmouth County Park System and Challenged Youth Sports, Middletown and is the first universally integrated playground in New Jersey. An additional universally accessible playground is Tony's Place, located in Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park
, Long Branch.
Adjacent to Challenger Place is the Sprayground. This water-enhanced playground is a great place to be cool and play with water. The facility is open daily from mid-May- early September. The Sprayground opens weekdays at 11 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Closing is at 7:30 p.m.
This facility provides refreshment for park visitors and participants in Park System summer camp programs. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Due to limited capacity, individuals and family are welcome; groups outing are not permitted. For further information, contact the park office at 732-542-1642, Mondays-Fridays, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., or view our Sprayground FAQ for answers to general questions.
The Sprayground is preparing for a facelift!
Plans are underway to renovate the popular spray park for the 2016 season. Renovations include updating the spray features; replacing the existing surface with a colorful bright blue one; and adding new features like “raining leaves”, domes of cascading water, and a series of high to low play troughs. The pumping system will also be replaced for improved water filtration. Work is expected to begin after the Sprayground closes for the 2015 season (last day of the season is Sunday, September 13).
We look forward to unveiling all of the fun and fantastic new features our Sprayground will offer in 2016!
Here are some images of our plans:
Plans for a New Pool Building
The existing pool building at the site is obsolete and inadequate for current programming needs. The proposed construction improvements include a new pool support building with changing areas, toilet rooms and a small office. The new building will be in a new location, south of the pools. Access to the pool area will be through the new building. Additional site work amenities include new circulation routes, sitting area and rejuvenated landscaping. Construction is anticipated to begin in June 2015 and be completed by the December 2015. See our building plans. | See our site layout plan.
Model Rockets and Airplanes
The use of model rockets and radio controlled model aircraft is permitted, with appropriate permit, in designated areas on the south side of Highway 537. For details on obtaining a permit, and other requirements, please see our complete rules.
PLEASE NOTE: Large group (over 50 people) gatherings are not available at this site. A Picnic Shelter can be rented for a max of 50 people. Please see Picnic Area & Shelters for more information and nearby County Park System facilities where larger groups can be accommodated.
A paved trail winds its way around and through the north side of this active park. The 2.3 mile trail has two loops for you to choose and vary your trail experience. The park also offers an in-line skating rink for casual, rental or league use.
